To measure for a glass table top, measure the table or base, not the old glass on it. Decide the overhang and add it to each side, check both diagonals, and choose the corners and the edge. A table top is the one piece where it is safe to give us the exact finished size you want, because nothing has to fit inside an opening.
What do I measure?
| What | How |
|---|---|
| The base | Width and length across the frame or pedestal at its widest point. |
| The overhang | How far the glass should go past the frame on each side. |
| The diagonals | Corner to corner, both ways, to check the base is square. |
| The corners | Square, or a radius you choose. |
Our table tops are toughened glass, 10 mm or 12 mm thick, with square or rounded corners and a polished or bevelled edge.
How do I measure it?
Step 1: Decide which job it is
A full glass top carries the load and is the table. A protector sits on a solid top and only has to resist heat and scratches. Say which one you want, because the thickness differs.
Step 2: Measure the base
Measure width and length across the frame or pedestal at the widest point. If you are replacing broken glass, measure the furniture it sat on.
Step 3: Add the overhang
Glass that finishes flush with the frame shows every wobble. Most tops overhang by 10 mm to 25 mm on each side. Add twice the overhang to each base figure to get the glass size.
Step 4: Check both diagonals
Measure corner to corner both ways. If the two differ, the base is out of square. Send us both figures, not the average.
Step 5: Choose the corners
A radius is safer on a table people walk past. Radius corners go from 5 mm to 200 mm in steps of 5 mm. Trace an existing radius on card if you are matching one.
Step 6: Choose the edge and enter the size
Pick polished or bevelled. Type the finished width and length into the configurator, then check the dimensioned drawing before you pay.
How do I work out the glass size?
Glass size is the base size plus the overhang on both sides. For example, a frame of 1,150 mm by 650 mm with a 25 mm overhang all round gives a top of 1,200 mm by 700 mm. Write down the base size and the glass size separately, so it is clear which figure you are giving us.
How heavy will it be?
Every millimetre of glass thickness weighs about 2.5 kg per square metre. A 1,200 mm by 700 mm top is 0.84 square metres, so in 10 mm it weighs about 21 kg. Check your own size in the glass weight tool before you plan who will lift it. See glass weight and handling.
Can a table top be shaped?
Yes. A top with one sloping edge can be raked, and is priced by hand for now. For a round, oval or irregular top, choose Rake and then "Send us a template or CAD drawing instead", and we price it by hand. Read shelves and table tops for more on thickness and use.

Questions we get asked
Should I measure my old glass top?
No. Measure the furniture. The old top may have been cut wrong or chipped back.
How much overhang is normal?
Most tops overhang by 10 mm to 25 mm on each side. Decide before you order, because a finished top cannot be made bigger.
Can a table top be annealed glass?
No. Our table tops are toughened, because a table takes hot plates, elbows and dropped cutlery.
Can I have a bevelled edge?
Yes. Table tops and mirrors are the only pieces we bevel.
