Short answers to the questions we hear most at the counter and on the phone. Each one links to the full guide. If your question is not here, ask us.
Ordering
How do I order glass cut to size?
Open the configurator, choose what the glass is for, then enter your sizes, glass, edges, holes and cut-outs. You see a live drawing and price as you go, and nothing is ordered until you say so. The full walk-through is in ordering cut-to-size glass online.
Do I give you the opening size or the glass size?
Either, but say which. Give us the opening size and we make the deduction, or give us the exact glass size if you have already allowed for it. A glass size that is not marked as one can get the deduction taken off twice. See measuring an opening.
How accurately do you cut?
We cut to plus or minus 2 mm, and every order is confirmed with a dimensioned drawing before anything is made.
Can you measure for me?
Yes. Book a measuring visit and you get a written quote after the visit. The fee comes off what you buy next. Read measuring visits for how it works.
Why is my order checked before it is cut?
Made-to-measure glass cannot be changed once it is cut and toughened, so you tick that you have checked the sizes, holes and cut-outs on the drawing, and you can ask for a correction before cutting. See your drawing and checks.
Glass
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled afterwards?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or notched once it has been made, so every hole, notch and edge is finished before the glass goes into the furnace. See toughened, laminated and annealed glass.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heated and cooled quickly and breaks into small, blunt pieces. Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded with a plastic interlayer that holds the pieces together when it cracks. Our glass safety checker explains where each is used.
What thickness of glass do I need?
It depends on what the glass is for. Our glass thickness tool gives the thickness the workshop would cut for each use, and glass thicknesses and spans explains why. Anything structural needs a design check.
How heavy is a glass panel?
Every millimetre of thickness weighs 2.5 kg per square metre, so a square metre of 10 mm glass weighs 25 kg. The glass weight calculator works it out for your size.
Which edges can I choose?
Polished edges are standard. Bevelled edges are offered on mirrors and table tops only. See edge finishes.
Showers
Is shower and bath screen glass always toughened?
Yes. Every shower and bath screen we make is toughened, with polished edges, and the configurator does not let you order it any other way.
What thickness is shower glass?
Clear and tinted shower glass comes in 8 or 10 mm. Satin and fluted glass are 10 mm only. A hinged door must be 8 or 10 mm because the hinge has to grip the glass. See shower screens and enclosures.
Is my shower door left hand or right hand?
A hinged door is left hand when its hinges are on the left, viewed from outside the enclosure. A sliding door is described by the way it slides to open. See left or right hand.
Why does a fixed panel over 700 mm wide have two holes?
A fixed shower or bath panel up to 700 mm wide is held by U-channel only. From 701 mm it also gets two holes, 200 mm from the top and 200 mm from the bottom, for two wall brackets. See holes, notches and cut-outs.
Can you make a screen for a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Raked panels are priced online in the configurator. Some layouts sell provisionally and our staff confirm the rake before cutting. See raked panels and sloping ceilings.
Splashbacks
What glass is a splashback made from?
Every splashback we make is 6 mm toughened glass. See glass splashbacks.
Which colours can I choose?
We stock four catalogue colours: Crispy White, White, Blue and Black. Screen swatches are a guide, so ask to see a sample. A colour outside the four is priced by our team. Browse the RAL library on our colours page.
How do I measure for sockets?
Measure to the centre of each socket or switch from the same two edges of the glass, and we size the cut-out to the box. See measuring a splashback.
Can I see a splashback in my own kitchen first?
Yes. Upload a photo to the splashback visualiser. Your photo never leaves your browser.
Delivery
How much is delivery?
We confirm the delivery cost and day by phone before we send your order. See delivery, collection and lead times.
Can I collect my order?
Yes. Collection from our Fulham branch is free. Please ring before you set off. Our branches page has the address and opening hours.
How long will my glass take?
Made-to-measure glass is cut and toughened to order, so the time depends on the piece. The workshop confirms it on your order. For a date before you order, ask us.
What if my glass arrives damaged?
Tell us straight away with photos, and do not fit damaged glass. See returns and damage.
Can I return made-to-measure glass?
Made-to-measure glass is cut for your opening, so the 14-day cancellation right does not apply to it unless it is faulty or not as described. Your statutory rights for faulty goods are unaffected. See returns and damage.
Trade
How do I open a trade account?
Apply on our trade page. It is free to apply and there is no minimum spend. See trade accounts for what you need.
Do I get credit with a trade account?
Credit is a separate application from the trade account. A manager reviews every credit application, and once it is approved you choose Pay on account at checkout.
Do trade prices show with or without VAT?
Signed-in trade customers see prices without VAT by default, and anyone can switch the display. Every document shows the net amount, the VAT and the total.
What is the wallet card?
A card for your phone wallet with your name, account number and a barcode to scan at the counter. Balances are never printed on it, and there is no annual fee.
Payment
How can I pay?
Online by card at checkout, processed securely by our payment provider, so your card details never touch our servers. At the counter you can pay by cash or card, or on account if you have credit terms. See invoices, VAT and payment.
Do I pay a deposit on a quote?
When you accept a quote under £2,500 including VAT you pay in full. At or over £2,500 you pay a 50% deposit, and the balance before delivery or fitting.
My payment link has expired. What now?
Nothing has been charged. Contact us and we will send you a new link.
Why do my invoices come from two companies?
Our Fulham branch invoices as SW Glass Fulham Ltd and our Park Royal branch as SW Glass Ltd. Hardware goes on the Park Royal account, so an order with glass and hardware can have an invoice from each.
