To measure for a mirror, mark the space on the wall with masking tape, then measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at both sides. If the mirror fits between two fixed things, use the smallest figures and leave 3 mm at each side. Decide the holes, edge and corners before you order, because none can be added once the mirror is cut.
What do I measure?
The mirror configurator asks for a width and a height in millimetres, the thickness, the edge, the corners and any holes. Measure the wall, not the mirror that is there now. The old one may have been cut for a bathroom that has since been retiled.
| What | How |
|---|---|
| Width | Top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest if it sits between two fixed things. |
| Height | Left side and right side. Use the smaller figure. |
| Obstacles | Lights, sockets, cabinets and tile edges, from the same two edges each time. |
| Holes | The centre of each screw hole, X from the left edge and Y from the bottom edge. |
How do I measure it?
Step 1: Mark the space with tape
Put masking tape where the four edges of the mirror will be. Stand back and check the size looks right before you measure. Measure inside the tape.
Step 2: Measure the width at three heights
Top, middle and bottom. On an open wall, use the size you marked out. Between two cabinets or a wall and a cabinet, use the smallest figure and take 3 mm off each side.
Step 3: Measure the height at both sides
Left and right. Skirting and tiled splashbacks rarely run level, so use the smaller figure.
Step 4: Note the obstacles
Measure each light, socket or cabinet from the same two edges you used for the mirror. Decide whether the mirror should clear it, and tell us if you are not sure how.
Step 5: Decide the holes, edge and corners
Screw holes, a polished or bevelled edge, and radius corners are all made at the cutting stage. Choose them in the configurator before you order.
Step 6: Check the route into the room
A mirror does not bend. Measure the narrowest point between the front door and the wall, such as the turn at the top of the stairs.
Which thickness and edge can I choose?
Mirrors come in 4 mm or 6 mm, and the configurator offers only the thicknesses each mirror is made in. Mirrors are not toughened. You can have polished or bevelled edges; mirrors and table tops are the only pieces we bevel. Radius corners go from 5 mm to 200 mm in steps of 5 mm. Read mirrors for the types of mirror glass.
How accurate does it need to be?
We cut to plus or minus 2 mm. On an open wall that never shows. Between two cabinets it can, which is why you leave 3 mm at each side. Every order is confirmed with a dimensioned drawing before anything is cut. See drawings and checks.
What if the mirror is not a rectangle?
A mirror with one sloping edge can be raked: see how to measure a raked panel. A raked mirror is priced by hand for now. For a curved or irregular mirror, choose Rake and then "Send us a template or CAD drawing instead", and we price it by hand. Read sending a template or drawing.

Questions we get asked
Should I copy the size of my old mirror?
No. Measure the wall space as it is now. The old mirror may never have been right for it.
Can you drill holes after the mirror is made?
No. Holes are made at the cutting stage. Drilling a finished mirror can crack it or lift the silvering.
How much gap should I leave between cabinets?
Leave 3 mm at each side, so the mirror drops in without catching.
Is a mirror safety glass?
No. We do not toughen mirrors. Ask us before you fit a mirror in a door or a low panel.
