Glass delivery, collection and lead times

How we deliver glass on our own vans, how free collection from Fulham works, how lead times are set and what to check when your glass arrives.

Written by the SW Glass team · Last updated

We deliver glass on our own vans with our own drivers, and we ring you to confirm the delivery cost and day before we send it. You can also collect from our Fulham branch free of charge. Made-to-measure glass is cut and toughened to order, so the time it takes depends on the piece: ask us, and the workshop confirms it on your order.

Who delivers my glass?

Our own vans and our own drivers deliver your order. We do not hand glass to a courier. If a load is running late, you get a straight answer from the people who packed it.

How much does delivery cost?

We do not publish a delivery price list. When you order, checkout says: "Delivery: we'll confirm the cost and day by phone before we send it." We agree the cost and the day with you on that call, before anything leaves the workshop. If you want an idea of the cost before you order, ask us with your postcode and what you are buying.

Can I collect my order instead?

Yes. Collection is from our Fulham branch, and it is free. Ring the branch before you set off so the order is ready on the counter when you arrive. Opening hours and the address are on our branches page.

If you are not sure your vehicle will take the size you ordered, ask us to deliver instead.

How long will my glass take?

Made-to-measure glass is cut to your sizes and, where you choose toughened, toughened after cutting. Plain cut pieces are usually the quickest. Toughened pieces take longer because the furnace runs in batches. The configurator shows the current lead time for your exact piece once you have chosen the size and finish, and the workshop confirms it on the order.

We do not publish fixed lead times or delivery days, because they change with the work in the shop. If you have a date to hit, such as a fitter booked or a kitchen going in, ask us before you order and we will tell you what we can do.

Every order is confirmed with a dimensioned drawing before anything is made. Our guide to drawings and checks explains what to look for.

What should I tell you about heavy or large panels?

Glass is heavy. Every millimetre of thickness weighs 2.5 kg per square metre, so a square metre of 10 mm glass weighs 25 kg. Use our glass weight calculator to work out the weight of your piece and whether it is a one-person lift, a two-person lift or a job for lifting equipment.

The calculator is guidance for planning, not a manual handling assessment. Whoever moves the glass should assess the task, the load, the route and the person doing it. The HSE explains how in its manual handling guidance.

This is general guidance. For your project, follow the regulations and manufacturer instructions that apply, and ask your building control body, engineer or Gas Safe engineer where needed.

When we ring to arrange delivery, tell us about the route from the van to where the glass is going:

  • the floor it is going to, and whether there are stairs or a lift
  • the size of the lift, if there is one
  • narrow doorways, tight turns on stairs or low ceilings on the route
  • where we can park, and any parking restrictions
  • whether you will have people on hand to help carry it

If you are not sure a large panel will fit through your home, ask us before you order. A measuring visit can check the opening and the access together.

What should I check when my glass arrives?

Check every piece before you sign for it or fit it:

  1. Look along each edge and corner for chips and cracks.
  2. Check the faces for scratches.
  3. Measure the piece against your order and drawing. We cut to plus or minus 2 mm.
  4. Check any holes, notches or cut-outs are where the drawing shows them.

If anything is damaged or wrong, report it to us as soon as you see it, with photos of the piece and the packaging. Do not fit damaged glass. Our article on returns and damage explains what happens next.
