A hinged shower door must be 8 or 10 mm toughened glass, because the hinge has to grip the glass. The hinge is wall-to-glass when the door hangs on a wall, or glass-to-glass when it hangs on a fixed panel, made for the angle the two panes meet at. The configurator sets two or three hinges from the door width, and every hinged door in an enclosure gets three seals.
Why 8 or 10 mm only?
A shower hinge clamps the glass between two plates. Thinner glass is not held securely and moves under the weight of the door, so the configurator only offers 8 or 10 mm for a hinged door. Some hinge styles are made for 6 and 8 mm glass only. The configurator says so beside the hinge and will not accept one on a 10 mm door.
As a guide, 8 mm suits most enclosures and 10 mm gives a heavier, more solid door on frameless layouts. Satin and fluted glass come in 10 mm only. See thicknesses and spans.
Which hinge does my door need?
The configurator reads the joint from your layout:
| Where the door hangs | Hinge |
|---|---|
| On a wall | Wall-to-glass |
| On a fixed panel in a straight line | Glass-to-glass, 180 degrees |
| On a fixed panel at a splayed corner | Glass-to-glass, 135 degrees |
| On a fixed panel at a square corner | Glass-to-glass, 90 degrees |
A hinge that does not suit the joint, such as a wall-to-glass hinge on a glass-to-glass joint, is refused, and the configurator tells you why. A door hung on a fixed panel always gets that panel's U-channel, because the panel carries the door.
How many hinges will my door have?
The count follows the door's cut width, which is the width you order less the seal allowance. A door up to 700 mm wide takes two hinges. Over 700 mm and up to 800 mm it takes three. We make a hinged glass door up to 800 mm wide, so a wider door is refused and the configurator asks you to make it 800 mm or narrower. For a wider entry, use a fixed panel beside the door.
The hinge cut-outs are made before the glass is toughened, so the count and the hinge style are fixed once you order. A different hinge afterwards means a new door.
Which seals come with a hinged door?
Every hinged shower door in an enclosure gets three seals, added automatically: one on the closing edge, one on the hinge edge and one along the bottom of the door. Bath screens, fixed panels and sliding doors do not take them. Our hinges, channels and seals guide lists the seal codes and every other part.
How do I order a hinged door?
Step 1: Choose the layout
A single door between two walls, an inline run, a 90 degree corner, or the 135 degree corner with the door between two fixed panels. Open the shower configurator.
Step 2: Choose the glass and thickness
Pick clear, grey tint, bronze tint, satin or fluted glass, and 8 or 10 mm where the glass offers both.
Step 3: Set the hand
Hinges on the left, viewed from outside, is left hand. Our door hand guide explains how to check it.
Step 4: Check the hinge count and choose the finish
Check the two or three hinges set from your door width, then choose the hardware finish.
Step 5: Check the drawing
The drawing shows the hinge positions, the hand and the cut sizes. Tick to confirm it at checkout.
Do the 700 mm bracket rules apply to the door?
No. The 700 mm rule covers fixed panels only. A door keeps its hinge holes and takes no wall bracket holes. The fixed panels beside it follow the rule, as fixed-panel bracket holes explains. A fixed panel the door hangs on keeps its U-channel at every width.

Questions we get asked
Can I have a 6 mm hinged shower door?
No. Shower and bath glass is 8 or 10 mm, and a hinged door needs that thickness for the hinge to grip it.
Can I choose three hinges on a 650 mm door?
No. The count follows the door's cut width: two up to 700 mm, three over 700 mm up to 800 mm. The cut-outs are made before toughening, so the count cannot change after ordering.
Why is my door narrower than the width I entered?
The cut width is the width you order less the seal allowance, so the door and its seals together fill the opening.
Can I supply my own hinges?
The cut-outs must match the hinge exactly, so tell us the hinge before you order. Choose one in the configurator, or ask us first.
