Prices with and without VAT

Why retail customers see prices including VAT and trade accounts see them excluding VAT, how the VAT switch works, and what you are actually charged.

On this page

VAT is charged at 20% on our goods and services. If you are not signed in, or you have a retail account, the site shows prices including VAT. If you are signed in to a trade account, it shows prices excluding VAT. Anyone can use the inc/ex VAT switch to see the other figure. The switch changes the display only: you are always charged the VAT-inclusive total.

Signed in with an approved trade accountPrices excluding VAT, at trade rates

Trade accounts see ex VAT prices because that is how the trade quotes among itself. We have two price levels, retail and trade. Read trade pricing for how a trade account gets its rates.

How do I switch the view?

  1. Step 1: Find the switch

The inc/ex VAT switch is in the site header, and beside prices in the shop, on product pages and in the basket.

  2. Step 2: Choose the view

Choose inc VAT or ex VAT. Every price on the page changes to match.

  3. Step 3: Share the view if you need to

Your choice is held in the page address, so a link you copy opens with the same view for whoever you send it to.

What am I actually charged?

Whichever view you use, the amount we charge is the VAT-inclusive total. The basket and the checkout show the net amount, the VAT and the gross total, so the number you pay is never in doubt.

Every quote, invoice, credit note and statement prints the net amount, the VAT and the gross total in full. If you are VAT registered, use the invoice to reclaim the VAT in the usual way. Read invoices and credit notes.

Why does the price change when I sign in?

Two things change when a trade account signs in. The view moves to ex VAT, and the prices move to trade rates. Switch the view to inc VAT to compare like with like. A retail account sees the same prices as a visitor.

Is there anything without VAT?

A gift card is not charged VAT when you buy it. VAT is charged on what it is later spent on. See gift cards.

Where can I see both figures at once?

The glass pricing page shows every figure both including and excluding VAT, so a homeowner and a VAT-registered buyer can each read the number that applies to them. It reads the same live price book the checkout charges from.

Questions we get asked

Does the VAT switch change what I pay?

No. It changes how prices are shown. The charge is always the VAT-inclusive total.

I am a trade customer. Why do I see VAT on the invoice?

VAT is charged on trade orders too. The invoice shows it separately so you can reclaim it if you are VAT registered.

Why did the view change back?

Each page opens in your default view: including VAT for visitors and retail accounts, excluding VAT for trade accounts. Use the switch again on that page, or open a link that was copied in the other view.
