How to measure for a hinged shower enclosure

Measure a hinged shower enclosure or single door: opening width, door width, return width and height, how the glass is worked out and the hinge rules.

To measure for a hinged shower enclosure, measure the opening wall to wall where the glass will stand, decide the door width you want, measure any return from the side wall to the corner, and measure the height from the tray. You give us those figures and the configurator works out every pane, taking off the channel, the hinge gap and the seals once each.

Which figures does each layout ask for?

Door width is the finished glass width of the door. Opening width is wall to wall, where the glass will stand. Return width is from the side wall to the corner, where the return panel stands.

How do I measure it?

  1. Step 1: Mark the datum

Mark the tray lip or the finished floor in pencil. Every height is taken from there.

  2. Step 2: Measure the opening at three heights

Measure wall to wall along the line the glass will stand on, at the tray, at waist height and near the top. Use the smallest.

  3. Step 3: Measure the return

On a corner layout, measure from the side wall to the corner along the return, at three heights. Use the smallest.

  4. Step 4: Choose the door width

Decide how wide the door should be. A hinged glass door is made up to 800 mm wide. Check it clears the basin, toilet and radiator as it swings.

  5. Step 5: Measure the height at both ends

From the datum to the top of the glass, at each end of the run. Use the smaller figure, unless the ceiling slopes.

  6. Step 6: Pick the hand and confirm

Choose left or right hand, viewed from outside. Read the worked-out sizes on the size step and press Confirm these measurements.

How are the heights worked out?

On most layouts you give one measured height for the job. A fixed panel standing in U channel is that height less 3 mm, and a hinged door is that height less 8 mm for the shower seal along its bottom. The tops line up and the door sits clear of the tray.

The fixed panel and door hinged to the wall is the exception. Its field is Finished glass height, the height of the glass itself, and nothing is taken off it. The breakdown on the size step shows each figure either way.

How many hinges does a door get?

The width of the door decides it, on every hinged glass door we make:

Door widthHinges
Up to 700 mmTwo
Over 700 mm up to 800 mmThree
Over 800 mmNot made. Choose a narrower door.

A door hung on a fixed panel needs matching hinge preparation in that panel, which the configurator draws for you. Hinged doors are made in 8 mm or 10 mm glass, because the hinges have to grip it. Every hinged door also gets its three seals. See hinged doors in 8 and 10 mm glass.

What about the fixed panels?

Fixed panels follow our 700 mm rule. Up to 700 mm wide they are held by U channel only, with no holes. From 701 mm they get two wall bracket holes, 200 mm from the top and 200 mm from the bottom, 33 mm from the wall edge, whatever the number of hinges on the door.

A fixed panel with no edge on a wall takes no wall bracket holes. The single door between two walls has no fixed panel, so the rule does not apply. The doors keep their hinge preparation.

Where to go next

Questions we get asked

Is the door width the gap or the glass?

The glass. Door width is the finished glass width of the door. The fixed panel takes what is left of the opening, less the allowances.

Can I have a 900 mm hinged door?

No. A hinged glass door is made up to 800 mm wide. For a wider entry, choose a fixed panel and door, or a sliding enclosure.

Why is my corner enclosure sold provisionally?

Some corner allowances are figures our team checks before cutting. The sizes are labelled provisional and we confirm them before anything is made.

Can a door hinge on a sloping edge?

The configurator refuses hinges on a sloping edge. Keep the rake on an edge with no hinges, or ask us about your bathroom.
